Introduction

What we do.

Soladex is a multifaceted application designed for the Solar Industry as a whole. Our software offers our proprietary forecasting metric the Solar Power Index (SPI).

The SPI forecasts the amount of energy available from solar panels each day. By interacting with public and private data, analyzing local weather conditions, Soladex provides real time updates which allows consumers to maximize their Solar output, and utilize their solar systems at an unrivaled efficiency.

A common question many owners of Solar systems regularly ask is, should I sell, store, or use the solar my system has generated, luckily The SPI provides a solution to that which was once a very complex issue.

Transitioning Towards Renewable Energy

With California leading the charge, according to the new Renewables Portfolio Standard, CA plans to be 60% renewable by 2030, and 100% renewable by 2045.

California Solar Initiative (CSI)

Programs such as the California Solar Initiative, a 2006 initiative authorized by the California Public Utilities Commission which incentivized the population to go solar in the early years, when the technology was still expensive,

Net-metering

NEM 3.0 Key Implications CPUC released final NEM 3.0 Order on Dec. 15, 2022

Time and Requirements for NEM 2

  • Cut-over to NEM 3.0 after April 13, 2023: for NEM 2.0 complete interconnection applications must be submitted by 5pm

  • Complete Application:

  • Single line diagram

  • CA, Contractor License Board Solar Energy System Disclosure Document

  • Signed California Solar Consumer Protection Guide

CALSSA: source for Q&As, rate charts, maps and updates for members. See CALSSA.org for membership. NEM 3: Net Billing for Exports

  • Value of net export credits tied to the Avoided Cost Calculator

  • 7.5 cents/kWh average—no longer tied to retail

  • Rates vary by day and hour

  • For first 5 years:

  • export credit “adder” for PG&E and SCE customers

  • adder reduced by 20% for new vintages of customers each year through 2027

  • export rates locked in for 9 years

  • After first 5 years:

  • CPUC determines the ACC-based export values each year

  • No lock-in period

Netting Period Change is also Significant

  • NEM 3.0 adopts “instantaneous netting”

  • Netting period measures energy being imported or exported

  • Longer netting periods => more electricity use from the grid is offset by solar production

  • Instantaneous netting treats more electricity as exports at lower ACC-based value

Increased Opportunities for Batteries

  • Customers can store solar power in batteries during lower cost times (mid-day) and use the power at more valuable peak Time of Use periods

  • Alleviate instantaneous netting

  • Optimize Time of Use rates and impacts

  • Use power from batteries for self-consumption during peak periods to avoid high retail rates and share any excess power at slightly higher avoided cost-based rates

  • Additional incentives for DERs are being developed by the CPUC and the California Energy Commission to compensate battery owners to share their power when most needed by the electric grid

Treatment of NEM 1 and NEM 2 Customers

  • NEM 1.0 and NEM 2.0 benefits are grandfathered for existing customers, protecting customer investments from any revisions in NEM 3.0 for the 20 years

  • Customers can add a battery at any time after April 13, 2023 without impacting the NEM status of a solar system

  • But to be eligible, customers must have a valid interconnection request on file with the local utility by 5pm, April 13

Installations

Currently, a new solar installation owner can expect to pay anywhere between $2.41 to $3.27 per watt of DC power. Solar panels have never been this cheap, so an average 10 kW system would cost on average $28,400. A system this big could easily offset 100% of a large household electricity cost.  If you want to install solar panels, you should see this as a great solar investment, rather than an expenditure.

After all, the initial solar cost pays off within 5.5 – 7.5 years and the period after this is the money back in your pocket. The excess energy produced during the day can be stored in solar battery storage or sent to the grid, which then acts as your solar storage. Many homes can save a lot of money by using net metering, on average between $44,000 and $60,000 over a 20 year period.

Federal Tax Credits

Federal Solar Investment Tax Credit allows you to recover up to 26% of the cost of solar installation through tax credits. The credit is applied to your Federal Taxes only, so make sure that you pay enough in Fed Taxes for the incentive to make sense. If you cannot use all the ITCs in a single year, you can roll them over for up to ten years.  The Federal Tax Credits change over time, depending on when your solar system is installed:

  • 2021 and 2022 (January 1st 2021 to December 31st 2022) – you can get 26% of the total cost back through tax credits,
  • 2023 (January 1st to December 31st) – you can get 22% back in the form of federal tax credit,
  • After December 31st 2023 – you can get up to 10% of the cost of your solar PV system back in the form of federal tax credit for utility-scale projects. Residential solar is not eligible for any tax credits past 2023.

All of these government subsidized programs were created to ensure mass adoption and implementation of Solar throughout the state. these programs are designed to aid CA transition towards renewable energy. According to the state they have invested upwards of 100B in programs and subsidies in order to ensure the transition. CA now requires any new homes being manufactured are mandated to have solar. Whether you have a system that was installed prior to mandate that maybe antiquated, or the most contemporary array, all solar providers, salespersons, customers new and old, benefit from understanding what’s occurring on their roof.
